N.A. [Katherine Fowler Phillips] LETTERS FROM ORINDA TO POLIARCHUS By W.B. for Bernard Lintott 1705 1st Edition Hardcover Fair Octavo, full contemporary panelled calf, engraved portrait fronts., title in two-line border, preface, poem to publisher, advert., 246pp., adverts., blank. Calf worn, fronts. and title with damage and some loss, chiefly to margins, loss at some early corners, a few marginal tears, text block browned, and with some staining; staining at rear paste-down. No loss of text, and legible throughout, binding sound. The second edition being published in 1729 (with one letter added), the present volume represents the correspondence (48 letters) of Katherine Fowler Philips, 'The Matchless Orinda', to Sir Charles Cotterell, Master of Ceremonies at the Court of Charles II. "The best Letters I have met with in our English tongue, are those of the celebrated Mrs. Philips to Sir Charles Cotterell; as they are directed all to the same person, so they run all in the same strain, and seem to have been employed in the service of a refined and generous friendship. In a word, they are such as a woman of spirit and virtue, should write to a courtier of honour, and true gallantry." (Pack: Miscellanies.) Fair only. Price:
